Well take a moment and look at that piece of paper you’re going to give to the person between you and your perfect job. Is it clean, pressed and ready to greet the world or does it say “Maybe they won’t notice that little coffee stain.” or “I’ll just throw this together during the next commercial so I can get back to that great movie.”? Well yeah, they do notice.
Professionally how you look on paper is just as important as how you look in the mirror. Whenever possible, try to coordinate your resume package (resume, business cards, referral sheets, etc.). It can be done by using a few simple tricks.
- Spell check – always, always, always use it; have another pair of eyes review your document and; spell check again manually. Try reading your document backwards from end to beginning – errors will jump off the page.
- Give your page some air to breathe (white space) – Use a one inch margin all around the page (top, bottom, left & right).
- Add a little space between paragraphs –give the reader’s eyes a chance to rest between your thoughts.
- Add a SIMPLE graphic – this could be your initials, a simple logo if you have one or just one straight line in the right place.
- Use a good quality paper – a smooth grain is great for laser printing; keep colors neutral like white, ivory, cream, very light tan, sage, blue. Stay away from prints or textures. Ink should be black or a very, very dark color (no reds of any kind).
- Whenever possible, keep your documents flat – no folds, wrinkles, smudges, tears or coffee stains.
